I recently booked and took a round-trip flight from Atlanta, Georgia to Lisbon, Portugal. Since I currently live between the two countries, I’m often in Lisbon and often not ready to return to the US. This most recent trip is no exception.
I initially booked a three-week round-trip ticket on Delta Airlines from Atlanta to Lisbon. While in Lisbon, I decided that I wanted and needed to stay longer and searched for a later return ticket without having to pay any higher difference of a ticket price. After searching out the dates, I found a flight that I was able to not only change my flight without paying any additional money, but I was also able to upgrade from an economy class ticket to a Premium Select ticket, which is Delta’s branding for an enhanced and highest quality economy seat above their Comfort + product and typically on their international flights. This includes more room, wider seats, a fold-out adjustable footrest, and leg rest for a more comfortable experience on the 7-hour flight. It also includes a premium amenity kit and an elevated dining experience.
So, the option I had on the table was to either stay with an economy-class ticket and receive $200.00 and change with an eCredit, or upgrade with the extra amenities of the premium select product and still receive a $90.00 e-credit to use for other travel. Needless to say, I went with the upgraded product for a more comfortable experience and still received a $90.00 eCredit to use towards other travel.
I was able to do this simply by researching better flight options and getting more bang for my buck. As it turns out, I did. There are often opportunities like this that can save money and provide a more enjoyable and pleasant travel experience. The key is flexibility and doing a little research.
Be sure to always check for better options when you’d like to change dates, extend your travel, or simply want a better travel experience even after you’ve booked your flight. Now that most airlines have done away with change fees, which should not have existed in the first place, it is easier to change your ticket and travel experience based on your requirements.
