International or global travel is very rewarding and provides knowledge, insight, exposure, adventure and much more. However, if one hasn’t traveled domestically in their own country or may have never boarded a plane, train or ship, it could add a lot of anxiety and complexity to an international travel experience.
In my humble opinion, it is best to have experienced local or domestic methods of travel to know what to expect regarding the process of traveling. Not doing so can make what should be a pleasant international experience an unpleasant one. Of course, many things can always occur whether domestic or global travel but adding the additional requirements of international travel to the mix for someone who has never flown can be a daunting experience with one thing to contend with after another.
My point is…. traveling is best done in baby steps like anything else. One must get their feet wet or learn to crawl before the walk. Traveling locally within your country or territories can be fun and rewarding just as international travel. By doing so, you get to experience what’s needed to travel, how to buy a ticket, how to pack luggage, what you can or cannot take through airport security, how to board a plane, passenger safety and what’s expected of you as a passenger on an aircraft.
Additionally, one gets to learn how to plan and navigate locations in their own country that also prepares them for the next step of international travel. If it is difficult to navigate and comprehend logistics domestically within your own country, changes are you will have great challenges trying to navigate logistics in a foreign country….especially if English is not the primary language.
While this may seem like baby steps, and it is….we all had to start there or we had to experience life- learning lessons to teach us not to take that route again. Fortunately for me, I traveled a lot within the states and U.S. territories before traveling abroad. I believe that my domestic travel experiences shaped my overall travel journey that propelled me to traveling more and further.
So, by now you can determine that this post is mostly to encourage, inspire and motivate those that want to travel globally to start with local or domestic travel first. Once experiencing and comprehending the processes of traveling and navigating within your country, you may be ready for the next step of global travel.
I'm curious, has anyone taken their first travel experience, especially a first flight as a international trip? If so, please share with us your experience. Where were you flying from and to? What are you thoughts on the matter? I realize it can easily be the case in Europe with over 27 countries within the EU.
For all you new travelers, I encourage you to take the step and see what travel has to offer your life. In other words, TROT THIS GLOBE!!!
